FAQ for Riders

What is Cedar Creek?
Cedar Creek Therapeutic Riding Center provides equine-assisted therapy for individuals with physical and mental disabilities.

Where is Cedar Creek located?
Cedar Creek is located just south of Columbia, Missouri at 4895 E Hwy 163, between Meek's Hardware and Strawberry Hill Farm.

Who can participate in Cedar Creek’s riding program?
Our program serves individuals with physical, mental, and emotional disabilities. We also serve Veterans in special Veteran programming.

How do I register for lessons?
To register, contact Cedar Creek when registration opens (registration dates here) to reserve a spot and email or snail mail fully completed paperwork. Registration must be completed by the deadlines provided. All required forms, including a physician’s release form (completed within the past year), must be submitted before participation.

What is the cost of a session of riding?
The total cost for an 8-week session (spring and fall) is $600 and the cost of the summer 6-week session is $450. If you plan on riding with funding through Boone County Family Resources you MUST confirm funding availability with your Support Coordinator prior to the session start. For self-pay, a deposit of $50 is required with registration. For those needing scholarship support, please email a letter of request before the session begins to cedarcreektrc@gmail.com. A scholarship co-pay for $160 will be required and scholarships are limited. Income verification may be required.

What is your attendance policy?
We ask that riders attend all classes in their session unless illness prevents attendance. Cedar Creek relies on funding sources that require rider attendance and we have hundreds of volunteers who take time out of their week every week to be available to support the riders. Note that repeated absences without notice may result in removal from the program.

What if I need to miss a class?
If you cannot attend, please notify Cedar Creek 573-814-9700 as soon as possible so adjustments can be made.

Will classes be canceled due to weather?
Cedar Creek almost NEVER cancels classes - rain or shine, we are riding! In the rare occasion we have a cancellation we will post it on our social media accounts (Facebook and Instagram).

What is the weight limit for riders?
The weight limit for riders at Cedar Creek is 180 pounds. This ensures the safety of our horses, instructors, and volunteers.

Do riders ever become ineligible for riding after their initial evaluation?
For safety, we have to adhere to our weight limit of 180 pounds. Our certified instructors and occupational therapists continually review, assess and document riders in the program. There may be times when a rider's size or ability have changed such that they are unable to ride safely anymore and they will not be able to participate.

What happens during a riding session?
Lessons are tailored to each rider’s therapeutic needs, focusing on improving motor skills, confidence, and emotional well-being.

What if my rider is on a waitlist?
If a spot becomes available, Cedar Creek will notify you ASAP. Priority is given to those who have submitted all required registration materials.

How can I help Cedar Creek?
Cedar Creek relies on dedicated volunteers, donations, and community support. If you’re interested in volunteering or donating, please contact us!
